This novel could be a catalog. The author describes the clothing characters buy and wear, sometimes going on for pages. These descriptions might have worked in a 19th century novel. But it’s boring and does not move the story along. The story: An improbable fantasy about a waitress from a small town in Michigan who meets a wealthy, famous, handsome actor in Hawaii.
The narrator is the waitress’ best friend Vivienne which gives the story a creepy quality. Three’s a crowd, right.
Half way through the novel Viv meets Justin, and from then on, we have two couples.
But this novel isn’t really a romance. There is not enough tension between the characters. The story is instead a romp from one shopping trip to another shopping trip or party.
I am not sure how to classify the book. I liked the part early in the story where Viv walks out on her abusive husband. I thought this was going to about two single moms making a life for themselves and their kids. They’d have problems and figure out a way to overcome the problems.
But any hope of the story becoming a story quickly dissolved. Two Michigan housewives are suddenly the heart throbs of two famous actors. Fantasy.
The men are handsome, famous and wealthy. Ryan keeps giving the women money to shop.
Descriptions of sightseeing in London are summed up as beautiful and fabulous. What sights did they see? What was beautiful? Did they learn anything about the history of the town? Maybe the author has never been to London. But she’s been shopping. That’s what she describes: the apparel.
Waitresses in Michigan must be very well paid.
Even before the wealthy, famous, handsome guys start paying the bills, there’s the original trip to Hawaii and several shopping trips. All this on a waitress’s salary? Oh, and Alice is supporting two kids and going to flight school. Then there’s Viv’s kids. The kids are too well behaved. They don’t act like real kids. Mom’s dating a famous actor. Shrug.
The characters have all the depth of linoleum.
The author tells us that a good knowledge of wine will serve Alice well in high society.
I guess a knowledge of wine is better than no knowledge at all.
Alice’s teen age daughter will become more popular in school now that her mother is dating a famous actor. That’s the kind of popularity every kid needs.
Vivienne, the narrator, tells us wearing a bikini in Hawaii improved her self esteem. Our self esteem should be about intelligence, kindness, and accomplishments. Not about how we look in string bikinis. No wonder her marriage isn’t working. No wonder her husband didn’t contest the divorce.
Of course, the bikini was described in length. Maybe I should have bought a catalog instead. If I am going to be reading clothing descriptions…
It was hard to like these characters. These are NOT people I want to hang out with.

When in Maui The Unattainable Series Book 1 edition by Colleen Nye Kim Eggleston Stephanie Crabtree Contemporary Romance eBooks Reviews
I was attracted by the cover of this book. I took a vacation to Maui last year and loved it so the title drew me in. This book is an adult fairy tale- think Cinderella gets a second chance after her first prince turns out to be a frog after all. Two women, friends and moms, struggle with their marriages. They decide to escape their rural Michigan town with a vacation in Maui. Enter a tall handsome stranger. This book addresses issues many women face in a light humorous manner.
I found this book to be quite an interesting read. You have it in Vivianne's POV the whole way through, however you are taking part of her friend Alice's romance and amusing missteps in the beginning of a relationship. You then have where Vivianne herself gets into a relationship so you are brought into the mix of both females lives and relationship embarrassments and drama. If you get a kick out embarrassing moments in relationships then this is the book for you. The guys in it are also very sweet and thoughtful so...bonus.
Here is another amazing read from Colleen that you do not want to miss out on. Her characters in this story are strong and well built.
This story starts off with two best friends who worked very hard to lose weight and treated themselves to a trip. Vivianne ended up not going due to a horrible home life situation. Alice, Vivianne’s best friend ended up going with their other friends. What Alice didn’t know was that taking this vacation would absolutely change her life forever. It will also end up changing Vivianne’s life forever as well. Both Vivianne and Alice have their own obstacles when it comes to men and wanting to fall in love again. Are their hearts healed enough to open them up to these perfect men. You will find out what these strong women went through in their previous marriages.
Every woman wants to meet Ryan and Justin let alone spend time with them. These could possibly be the most perfect men and the ones that will help break those walls around their hearts. These men are everything would want in men to love them.
Interesting & entertaining story.
However, grammar, punctuation, spelling, & misuse of words made me so distracted, I kept wondering what the publisher was thinking! Are there no editors left in the field? I could have read with a highlighter in hand, & returned it to the publisher. Instead of a refund, I could have been been paid for doing their job for them!
Upon getting a fixed version of this (the original version had some serious issues on the ), I can say I truly enjoyed it.
This book is a great read. I highly recommend it! Once you start you won't be able to put it down. You'll feel as if you know the characters. I promise it won't disappoint. You can order the paperback or for you kindle..get it now! When In Maui
When in Maui is a wonderfully written romantic comedy. All Alice Tyler wanted was to escape the stresses of everyday life, and is instead faced with even more stress. What happens when you meet your dream guy while on a vacation to Maui with your best friends? You embarrass yourself and try to run and hide. That's what you do if you're Alice Tyler. At first she is infuriated at a man who keeps taking her reservations, then when you least expect it your best friend Vivianne works with him to try and bring you together. Will their secret plans work, or will they fail? Can Vivianne help Alice overcome her fear of relationships, or are they doomed from the start?
This book will have you laughing so hard your sides will hurt. You will go on an adventure as two friends run into unexpected experiences together. They must help each other overcome obstacles they didn't expect to find. You will learn a lot about their amazing friendship. I love how the book shows what true friendship is and how, with the help of a good friend, you can overcome anything life throws at you. This book is amazing.
